While I'm Away. A Workout Playlist

& Now a word from my BFFF.
--------------------------------

Quick intro for those who are asking “Who’s this guy?”: I fall into
the IRL category of Jamie’s friends, knowing her since before the two
of us could drive a car. Then a few years later we were carpool
buddies to school. A few (more) years after that and a piece of a
plastic rose now sits in my car - a token from when I stood as a
“Bridesman” at her wedding.

So while I try to hold back the tears (both to be strong and to not
get made fun of by her) from realizing she is moving to a spot where
she will no longer be a car ride away, I’m here to do my part in
contributing to her guest posts for the week.

When she asked me to be a guest blogger, I asked her what she had in
mind. Taking a cue from my music blog (ahem, Sight of Sound, ahem,
shameless plug), Jamie suggested I write about a playlist that could
be used when going on a run.

I’ve tried to get into running for the better part of a year and the
past few months I’ve been gaining some small victories in the overall
war. I truly believe it’s because of the right music I had going on at
the time. Since all of our music tastes are different, I wanted to
share what I feel are the right ingredients for a good running mix.

The Determination Tracks

I’m one of those people that wish life came with a soundtrack and
running is one of those moments. I know it sounds cheesy, but
somewhere in a playlist you should have songs that set a scene of
determination. These types of songs are usually longer in length and
include a buildup of sorts. Some examples: “Secret Crowds” by Angels
and Airwaves; “The Resistance” by Muse; “Sick Sad Little World” by
Incubus

The Adrenaline Fuel

These are the kinds of songs people think of when they visualize a
running playlist. The ones with the fast and/or hard beat that stands
to pump the blood in your body along with the bass in your ears. This
is where hard rock or hip hop songs usually get the most play, but
what I’ve noticed is that your playlist shouldn’t be filled with these
songs. Instead, spread them out. There have been a couple times when I
start to slow down but “Fuel” by Metallica comes on and it gives me a
surge of energy.

The Singalong Songs

For the most part, running is a solo adventure. Even if you run with a
friend or two, you most likely have headphones in so you’re in your
own little world anyway - why not have some fun? Fill your playlist
with some of your favorite tracks to sing along to (think about which
ones you would totally give a concert performance to while in the
shower). This is why I have no problem putting “Nuthin but a G Thang”
or a No Doubt track on my playlist. It helps occasionally to get lost
in the world of a favorite song and not think too much about how out
of breath you are or how much your legs hurt.

Slow Jams

Much like everyone would assume to fill the playlist with the
adrenaline tracks, people automatically assume not to put on anything
slow but I disagree - it all depends on placement. Depending on how
long you are running, odds are you are going to slow down at some
point and there is no problem matching the music to your mood. But the
two points when slower tracks can come into play are during the
“warmup” and “cool down” periods. Here is when would be best to throw
on some lighter Black Keys or Kings of Leon tracks.

And those are the perfect ingredients to a good running playlist. I
hope if you try them out that the results are tasty.

She loves music

I realize that it's a little early to tell, but I'm pretty sure Adelei [like her mommy and daddy] loves music.

A few weeks ago, Matt gave me a mixed cd. The first time I listened to it all the way through, Adelei started kicking at the beginning of Mumford and Sons 'The Cave', and stopped somewhere close to the end. On a separate occasion, she kicked along to Taking Back Sunday's new release 'El Paso'. I know, I know...this could all be coincidence, but I like to think she likes our taste in music.

On Sunday, I stumble upon this website that takes famous tracks and modifies them into lullabies. I was a little skeptical at first, but after listening to a few samples for Bob Marley, Kanye West, and No Doubt, I fell in love.

Check them out and see for yourself.

30 days of me::A Concert

Day 6: Whatever tickles your fancy

Last night, Mr. O, Aaron, & I decided to go to a concert.
We saw Emery
Terrible Things
Queens Club
Sent by Ravens
Kiros
Evolette

I've never been to a concert like this before. First of all, we were confused because we thought it was going to be at a small club, but it ended up being at a church. Honestly, the only band I had ever actually heard before was Emery. ANYWAYS...I was expecting there to be a couple hundred people there, but unless I just really suck at estimation, I don't think there were MORE than 100 people in attendance. It was very intimate and sweet.

Evolette was first. They were pretty good. Aaron said they reminded him of Paramore. I'm kind of interested in hearing their album when it comes out.

Kiros was very energetic. They are a group from Canada, and KEPT reminding us about it. Their music was good and their Tshirts were cool.

When Sent by Ravens came on, I started to feel like I was at church camp. I just remembered back in the day when they would have people come in and sing and it would be all fun, and then they would start talking about how we should give our lives to God and the mood would go from fun to serious. DON'T get me wrong. I was raised southern baptist, and I am a Christian, but I don't believe in pushing your beliefs on someone else. It didn't last long, and maybe I was overreacting, but I started to feel a little out of place. Anyways, their music was pretty good, but if I never had the opportunity to see those guys in concert again, I don't think I'd be upset.

By the time the fourth band came on, I was starting to wear out. But, Queens Club was like a breath of fresh air. The lead singer reminded me of Napoleon Dynomite, and they were totally grungey-garage band, electro crazy awesomeness. Check them out!

For those of you who don't know, Terrible things is made up of Fred [former TBS member], Josh [former Coheed&Cambria member], and Andy [former Hot Rod Circuit member]. It was really awesome. I would definitely enjoy seeing them again, and hope I get the chance to.

But what really made the night awesome was Emery. Apparently their bus had broken down, so only a few of their band members made it. AKA an acoustic show. It.was.amazing. They had us all sit down, which I was thankful for because I was exhausted at this point. They sang to us, and talked to us. They let people ask questions. It was special.

My Favorite Song right now is
Airplanes pt. II
By B.o.B. featuring Eminem and Haley Williams

The first time I heard it, I got chill bumps. But when I listened, I mean really, truly listened to the lyrics it was like this was coming straight from my long lost friend.

I could really use a wish right now

I've been neglecting you guys, and I am so sorry.

All I've had time for lately is school, but I did find time every night this week to cook.
Finals will be over next week, and I'll finally be able to breathe again.
I'm interested in seeing what the summer brings, but I really hope it includes:
a job
a new tattoo
a vacation
a lot of art
a vintage swimsuit
a concert or two
a lot of quality time w. my boo & my friends

My new obsession:

Thanks, Matt.

Don't want no paper gangster

As embarrassed as I am to say this....
I'm kind of obsessed with Lady Gaga.

I made Aaron download The Fame Monster for me
and I've been listening to it--
while walking to school
while doing my homework
while singing in the shower
while driving......
it's getting pretty ridiculous.

I knew it was getting bad when Matt called and I purposely didn't answer until my favorite part [yes, she's my ringtone, too] went off.

As if that's not enough...apparently Aaron has been listening, too.
Because the other night, while we were out to dinner with his mother, he started singing humming one of her songs.
When I looked at him with SHOCK on my face, he said, "What? I think Lady Gaga is my favorite pop singer."
I could have died.right.then.

round my hometown

Hello Friends!

So much has been going on lately! This is probably going to be a big [picture] update. Beware :)

A few weeks ago was the Paramore/No Doubt concert. It was amazing:

Then my nephew turned 1!

And this I had made to show the world how proud I am of MY MAN :)

That's all!! Good night :)

You sure have changed since yesterday

Remember when I told you all that I was going to see Paramore & No Doubt in concert soon?
Well, tonight was the night. [or last night, for those of you who are normal and actually went to bed]
Anyways, I am extremely exhausted, but I could NOT wait to post this. Not only did I laugh while filming this, I also laughed out of control while watching it several times. Maybe it was just the lack of sleep talking.

Judge for yourself.

Apparently He's just a girl.

There's more to come, so keep an eye out. We were pretty far away, so the pictures didn't turn out too great, but I had an amazing time. Hope some of you are as lucky as we were and get to go to one of their shows!

I finally got a few of my prints back from my teacher, so I thought I'd share them with you all.

Please ignore the low quality scans.

Constructive criticism welcomed!

my new love

...or at least my new obsession.

Remember a few days ago when I was talking about my spring break trip? and I mentioned that my favorite picture was on my friend's camera? Well, she finally sent it to me.

Us, with Lance from the Leo Project. I swear he is the single most talented and attractive guy I've ever met. And if I weren't completely committed to Aaron....well, nevermind. Not to mention that he is only 19 & supposedly married.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
